Graves County Circuit Court Overview

Kentucky uses a unified Court of Justice with the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Circuit Court, and District Court. Circuit Court is the general-jurisdiction trial court. The Kentucky Circuit Court source describes the court as the trial level for felony criminal cases, civil matters not assigned exclusively elsewhere, family matters where applicable, appeals from District Court, and larger or more complex disputes.

In Graves County, the Circuit Court and District Court share the same local court-record point of contact through the Office of Circuit Court Clerk. Graves County Court Offices

Graves County official sources do not list separate numbered trial courts the way some states list numbered district courts. Instead, local Circuit Court and District Court functions operate through the Kentucky Court of Justice structure and the Circuit Court Clerk office. The useful local table is therefore a court and office table, not a numbered-court roster.

For court records, fines, bonds, juries, case filings, and copies, use the Circuit Court Clerk. For land records, marriage licenses, elections, motor vehicles, delinquent tax-sale records, and county legal recordings, use the County Clerk.

Graves County Circuit Jurisdiction

Circuit Court is the local trial court for felony criminal cases, higher-value civil matters, family matters where applicable, and appeals from District Court. A criminal case may begin with an arrest, complaint, citation, or preliminary hearing in District Court before moving to Circuit Court after indictment or information. Civil matters can also divide by the claim amount and subject matter assigned under Kentucky court rules.

District Court remains central to many Graves County records. The District Court page lists traffic offenses, violations, misdemeanors, probate of wills, small claims of $2,500 or less, civil cases of $5,000 or less, domestic violence proceedings, mental commitments, juvenile matters, arraignments, and felony probable-cause hearings. That means a Graves County Circuit Court search sometimes begins by confirming whether the record is actually in District Court.

Graves County Case Flow

A case path depends on the filing type. Traffic and misdemeanor cases often remain in District Court unless appealed. Felony matters may begin with arrest, booking, bond, and District Court screening before the case moves into Circuit Court for indictment, plea, trial, disposition, and sentence. Civil and family cases begin with filings, service, hearings, motions, orders, and judgment or dismissal.

Bond can be set by a preset schedule or by a judge. Bond payment rules differ based on whether the courthouse is open.

Graves County Court Participants

The local Circuit Court Clerk is Emily Ward Buzanis. The Circuit Court Clerk's role is not the same as the County Clerk. Kentucky Court of Justice describes circuit court clerks as the officials responsible for custody, control, and safe storage of Circuit Court and District Court records. The office also receives lawsuits and court documents, is present during trials, schedules juries, receives fines, and handles bond money.

Prosecution routing depends on the charge level. Graves County Fiscal Court lists County Attorney John Cunningham at 1102 Paris Road, Suite 2, Mayfield, with phone numbers 270-247-6321 and 270-247-6323. County Attorneys generally handle many District Court matters, including misdemeanors, traffic, juvenile, and ordinance cases. Felony prosecutions are typically handled by a Commonwealth's Attorney, but the research did not locate a current official Graves-specific Commonwealth's Attorney page.

Restricted Graves County Court Records

Some Circuit Court and District Court records are restricted by law, court order, or case type. Juvenile court records and juvenile dockets have separate confidentiality rules. Adoption, mental-health, sealed, and expunged records are not searched like ordinary public files. Personal identifiers, financial account numbers, minor-identifying information, and safety-sensitive addresses may be redacted from public copies.

Kentucky expungement statutes can remove or delete qualifying records from official state background checks after a court order. That does not mean a portal user should treat missing online data as proof that no case ever existed.
